My work is like a three act play. I love getting to know my subject, planning the composition, colors, and the big picture. I almost always select a subject based on color and contrast. If the colors compel me and it has sufficient contrast then I will go with it whether it is a still life, landscape, portrait, or whatever. I make decisions by studying the subject before I ever get started. I make mental notes of colors and which areas will need several layers of glaze. If I believe that I can capture in paint what I see, then I proceed with the painting. By the second act, I have gotten myself into big trouble. Nothing seems to go right and I feel like giving up; however, once I start a painting, I don’t abandon it.
After a problem solving session, I move onto act three when the
whole painting comes to a completed end. Sometimes it finishes the way I hoped it would, and other times I have a surprise ending. I consider each painting to be its own little drama and I enjoy watching what ending others see.
